Another round of Virtual NFL Draft.

With only 2 days before the upcoming NFL Draft, I decided to play the Virtual NFL Draft game again (http://first-pick.com/NFL/DraftGame.aspx). Of course I play the role of Les Snead and here are my picksSt. Louis Rams 2013 draft Round 1 Pick 21 (from CINN): Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia (A)Round 1 Pick 22: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama (A)Round 2 Pick 5 (from CINN): Jonathan Cyprien, SS, Florida International (A)Round 2 Pick 22 (MIA): Arthur Brown, OLB, Kansas State (B)Round 3 Pick 5 (PHI): D.J. Swearinger, FS, South Carolina (B)Round 3 Pick 16: Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech (A)Round 4 Pick 16: Brian Schwenke, C, California (A)Round 5 Pick 3 (PHI): Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina (A)Round 5 Pick 16: Terry Hawthorne, CB, Illinois (B-)Round 6 Pick 16: Bennie Logan, DT, LSU (A)Round 7 Pick 16: Joseph Fauria, TE, UCLA (B-)Overall:First round was far out as other teams dish out trades and what not I was glade to trade down but still get Tavon Austin AND Chance Warmack. The trade down also got me an early 2nd and 5th round picks to which I used to pick SS Jonathan Cyprien then trade do another trade down to get an extra early 3rd round pick. Based on the system rankings I placed 7th out of 32 which is good in my book. I could had been better had I picked DeAndre Hopkins on the Round3 pick 5 then D.J Swearinger on the 16th pick but I was afraid I might lose him early so I decided on Quinton Patton instead.

Steelers Pre-draft Visits Show That Defense Is Still A Priority

As the NFL's pre-draft visit period comes to a close, the total tally of the players entertained by the Pittsburgh Steelers tells a familiar tale. Back on January 8th, If It Ain't Steel wrote an article that said the fixing of the Steelers starts with defense. Apparently the Steelers themselves agree. Each NFL team is allowed 30 pre-draft visits. The Steelers total of 24 is more heavily represented by the defensive side (17) of the ball than the offensive side (7) of it. While there are holes over the entirety of the roster, the defensive side of the ball is...(ahem) more experienced and mature. Three of the four starters in the defensive backfield alone carry an average age of 33 as of the 2013 season. Aside from the array of pass rushers brought in (and I am a firm believer in the theory that you can't have too many players who can rush the passer), two things stand out when looking at the visiting players. The first being that the cornerbacks brought in indicate where the Steelers will be looking for that much needed youth and depth. It is of interest that of the cornerbacks making visits - Florida State's Xavier Rhodes, Utah State's Will Davis (whose interesting story is linked here: http://tinyurl.com/cjh26ad), UConn's Blidi Wreh-Wilson (pictured above), LSU's Tharold Simon and William & Mary's B.J. Webb - all but one are mid-round prospects. Are the third through the fifth rounds where they will look to pull the trigger on the position? The Steelers let unrestricted free agent CB Keenan Lewis walk via free agency, so that leaves Ike Taylor, Cortez Allen and William Gay as the only three who could be considered locks to make the 53-man roster next season. Bringing up the rear, as it were, behind them are Curtis Brown, DeMarcus Van Dyke, Josh Victorian, Isaiah Green and Justin King. Conventional wisdom dictates that only one or two of those five players make it onto the 53 man roster, and the odds favor only one if the Steelers invest a mid-round pick on another cornerback. The other thing that stood out was the lack of true five-technique defensive linemen to make their way to the South Side. Although Steelers.com says Utah’s Star Lotulelei, Florida’s Sharrif Floyd, BYU’s Ziggy Ansah (who himself could also play OLB) and Florida State’s Bjoern Werner are the top defensive line prospects in this month's NFL Draft (and players the Steelers could potentially select), none of those were brought in. In fact, none of the defensive linemen brought in were true defensive lineman. - http://tinyurl.com/cywjc8rThough Clemson's DE Malliciah Goodman was a pre-draft visitor, and though Georgia's DE Cornelius Washington has been linked to the Steelers as high as the second round and as low as the fifth round, the signing of Steve McLendon was likely an indication that any such pick would be in the lower rounds for depth and special teams purposes. One such player to consider might be Utah's Joe Kruger who declared early for the draft following his junior season. Per Gil Brandt of NFL.com, "Kruger - the younger brother of Paul Kruger, who was a member of the Super Bowl XLVII-champion Baltimore Ravens and just signed a lucrative free-agent contract with the Cleveland Browns - stood on all of his numbers from the combine. Kruger looked very good in the positional workouts." - http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1749704/joe-kruger"Paul ran me through what this was like for him, what the experience was like, how to calm myself down when things get tense," Joe Kruger said. "Things are going well. I'm prepared for it. I've met a lot of good people."Kruger, who led the team with six sacks, had two forced fumbles, an interception for a touchdown and blocked a field goal, has good size (6'6 3/8" 261 lbs.), quickness, and arm length. Has received plaudits for his effort and ability to bull-rush offensive linemen and he says he can play "all four positions on the defensive line."The pre-draft visits on the whole were: DE/OLB John Simon (3rd round prospect) - Ohio State; RB Christine Michael (4th rd pros.) - Texas A&M; ILB Vince Williams (7th rd pros.) - Florida State; OLB Jarvis Jones (1st rd pros.) - Georgia; OLB Jamie Collins (2-3 rd pros.) - Southern Mississippi; OLB Khaseem Greene (2-3 rd pros.) - Rutgers; SS Jonathan Meeks (7-FA rd pros.) - Clemson;S Phillip Thomas (2-3 rd pros.) - Fresno State; ILB Michael Mauti (5th rd pros.) - Penn State;DE Malliciah Goodman (4th rd pros.) - Clemson; WR Josh Boyce (2-3 rd pros.) - Texas Christian; RB Johnathan Franklin (2nd rd pros.) - UCLA; SS Shamarko Thomas (3rd rd pros.) - Syracuse; CB Will Davis (5th rd pros.) - Utah State; G Nic Embernate (6-7 rd pros.) - San Diego State; CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson (3rd rd pros.) - Connecticut; CB Xavier Rhodes (1st rd pros.) - FSU;LB Sio Moore (4th rd pros.) - Connecticut.CB Tharold Simon (4-5 rd pros.) - LSU;CB B.W. Webb (4-5 rd pros.) - William & Mary;SS Duke Williams (5-6 rd pros.) - UNR;RB Eddie Lacy (1-2 rd pros.) - Alabama;WR Justin Brown (7-FA pros.) - Oklahoma;and WR Tavarres King (4-5 rd pros.) - Georgia.(This list will be updated if any more pre-draft visits occur on Monday or Tuesday.)~TIDBITS: "Heath (Miller) is working out and he looks great," Ben Roethlisberger said during an appearance on 102.5 WDVE. "He's walking without a limp. From what I saw I think he looked good." - http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/4/17/4235778/heath-miller-injury-update-looks-great~Antonio Brown is grateful to have Emmanuel Sanders back. - http://tinyurl.com/c5uusqc ~In "the most unkindest cut of all," Ex-Steeler Harrison signs with the Cincinnati Bengals. Lemme 'Splain....the must have pick

Hi all,The first installment for the season contains a bit of sarcasm, but may provide a bit of funny prophecy as well....with the (whatever mid-round pick) in the NFL draft, the Dallas Cowboys select.....Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma!Just think about it.  Romo will not last forever.  And Kyle Orton, however serviceable a QB he may be as a back up, is not someone you would hang a franchise tag on.  The only "fitting" QB for the 'Boys is someone who has the first name the same as the last name of your most decorated coach in franchise history, and the same last name as your overbearing, fly by the seat of your pants, plastic faced owner.Yes, this sounds like a pick drawn up from the depths of the Bros Grimm scariest tales that never made it to print.  But the likelihood that this pick could become a reality is tangible.  After all, Landry Jones was a projected first rounder to some if he had chosen to leave school last year.  His team was doing well, his stats were good.  I even think he was in some circles of Heisman talk at one point of another two years ago.  Has he just had a bad year, like Barkley, or was his good year the outlier in his statistical resume?Truth be told, his stats were really no different between the years, nor were his team's win-loss record.  I think his publicity just couldn't keep up with the expectations thrown at QBs this year due to the outrageous year that Luck and RG3 had the year prior.  I actually think he would be worth a look should he slide to the 4th rnd.Lemme Sum Up!  If there was a time to get a decent QB in the mid rounds, it's this years draft.  And for the Cowboys, it only makes sense that if you do draft one, he has that name.  Landry Jones. Jones in the first, now what?

Now that the Steelers have selected outside linebacker Jarvis Jones in the first round of the draft, where do they go from here? The top needs are, in no special order, running back, wide receiver, safety and inside linebacker, with offensive line and quarterback being depth needs. There is still a lot of talent available at all of those positions, but particularly at WR, RB and safety, even though the safety position got hit harder than usual in the first round. My top guys still available in no particularl order would be:Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas StateKevin Minter, LB, LSUEddie Lacy, RB, AlabamaJonathan Franklin, RB, UCLAMontee Ball, RB, WisconsinJamar Taylor, CB, Boise State - even though it's not a "need"Justin Hunter, WR, TennesseeRobert Woods, WR, USCKeenan Allen, WR, CaliforniaJonathan Cyprien, S, Florida InternationalGiven that there are 10 players listed there and the Steelers pick at 16 in the second round, they should have a good shot at one or more of those listed when they make their second selection - given that there are several top players also available at non-need positions. If I'm making the pick for the Steelers, I take somebody in the second round who scores touchdowns - ie. a running back or receiver. The only way that changes for me is if Brown is still on the board. A defensive captain at Kansas State, Brown has been compared positively to Ray Lewis in terms of his leadership and sideline-to-sideline playing ability. But if the Steelers were able to pull off taking Jones in the first round and taking, say, Franklin or Woods in the second, I think fans would be ecstatic.

Construction's Fatal Four

In the construction industry, OSHA states that there are 4 main causes of worker deaths per year. These "fatal four" are comprised of falls, struck by object and caught-in / between and electrocution. OSHA estimates that eliminating the Fatal Four would save 410 workers lives in America per year. Currently OSHA found that 85% of all citations are related to these four construction hazards.According to OSHA, falls from heights are the leading cause of fatalities in construction, while falls on the same level are one of the leading causes of injuries. The SafetySkills® Fall Protection course fulfils some of the requirements of a training program as outlined in 29 CFR 1926.503. The fulfilled requirements include: nature of fall hazards in the work area, the use and operation of guardrail systems, personal fall arrest systems, and safety net systems. This can be used to supplement company specific training and provide employees with a general knowledge of fall protection systems and fall hazards that exist in the workplace.Caught in or between fatalities caused 3% of the deaths in construction for 2011. Struck by Fatalities make up 10% of the total deaths in construction. These hazards are often created when working around heavy equipment. Some common examples of Caught-in and caught-between injuries include: trench or excavation collapse, hand or foot caught in rotating equipment like augurs, rollers or wheels, unguarded moving parts in machinery, turned over vehicles, accidents during equipment or machinery maintenance, and accidents involving rigging used to lift or pull heavy materials.  Upon completion of the SafetySkills Struck By / Caught Between online safety training course, the Learner will have displayed the ability to recognize common stuck by/caught between hazards associated with work in the construction industry and their recommended safe work practices. This course provides an overview of 29 CFR 1926.20.OSHA states that about 5 workers are electrocuted every week and electrocution courses 12% of worker deaths each year. It takes very little electricity to cause harm. The primary causes of electrocution are contact with overhead power lines, contact with live circuits in panels, poorly maintain cords and tools and lightning strikes. The SafetySkills® Electrical Safety online safety training course covers topics related to basic electric safety as outlined in 1926.403, 1926.404, 1926.416, and 1926.417. This course focuses on the construction industry and is not intended for qualified workers, who according to OSHA’s definition is a person knowledgeable in the construction and operation of the electric power generation, transmission, and distribution equipment involved.
