Dennis Green doesn't think Dolphins' Tannehill is 'great QB'

Quite a few folks around the NFL see the Miami Dolphins as the team that will take a giant leap forward this season.

But one of those people is not NFL Network analyst and former head coach Dennis Green.

Green joined "Inside Training Camp Live" on Tuesday to discuss what he believes is the biggest flaw in the Dolphins' plan to compete with the New England Patriots for the top spot in the AFC East.

For starters, the former coach hardly is sold on second-year player Ryan Tannehill, and that's only half of it.

"I don't think Ryan's (Tannehill) a great quarterback," Green said. "So, the key is going to be, how can they overcome losing two great players."

The "two great players" Green speaks of are running back Reggie Bush and left tackle Jake Long, who both moved on during the offseason, to the Detroit Lions and St. Louis Rams, respectively.

"If you wanted your quarterback to be a good player and have a great year, then you should have signed the best players on your offense," Green went on to say. "And when you don't do that, you're going to have problems."

The departures of Bush and Long left Tannehill and the Dolphins with a very inexperienced combo of Lamar Miller and Jonathan Martin to fill the two spots.

Despite the offseason acquisition of wide receiver Mike Wallace, Green doesn't see the wideout's contribution as something that can offset the aforementioned losses.

"I like Mike Wallace if he's here to play, but Mike Wallace is no Reggie Bush," Green said. "Mike Wallace is a great guy with great speed. He's made a lot of plays down the field, but Reggie Bush has scored a lot of touchdowns. And Mike Wallace is no Jake Long, either.

"I like him, I think he's a fast player. He can make plays down the field, but I think you always start with keeping your own good players, because they don't have that physiological negative effect when you lose one of your better players. ... I'm just saying why I think they're going to struggle offensively."

So there you have it. Just don't tell the guys at Around The League.

SAC Capital Is Indicted

Federal authorities announced a raft of criminal charges on Thursday against SAC Capital, the hedge fund run by the billionaire Steven A. Cohen, an unusually aggressive move that could cripple one of Wall Street's most successful stock trading firms.

In the 41-page indictment that includes four counts of securities fraud and one count of wire fraud, prosecutors charged the fund and its units with carrying out a broad insider trading scheme between 1999 and 2010. The case seeks to attribute certain criminal acts of employees to the company itself.

The indictment also takes aim at SAC for "an institutional indifference" to wrongdoing that "resulted in insider trading that was substantial, pervasive and on a scale without known precedent in the hedge fund industry."

The case, announced by federal prosecutors and the F.B.I. in Manhattan, is the culmination of an investigation that spanned a decade. As the federal government mounted a relentless crackdown against insider trading, an investigation that reached into corporate board rooms and Wall Street trading floors, it zeroed in on Mr. Cohen as a central target.

Without evidence directly linking Mr. Cohen to illicit trades, the government stopped short of criminally charging him. But the case is a blow to him all the same. Not only does the firm name bear his initials, but Mr. Cohen also owns 100 percent of the firm he founded with his own money more than two decades ago.

Mr. Cohen, 57, an avid collector of art and real estate, also faces civil charges. The indictment on Thursday comes on the heels of the Securities and Exchange Commission's filing a civil action last week that accused Mr. Cohen of failing to supervise employees suspected of insider trading. The government's effort to root out insider trading on Wall Street has swept up more than 80 people; of those, 73 have either been convicted or pleaded guilty.

But Thursday's indictment against SAC itself represents a new phase in the investigation. Criminal charges against large companies are rare, given the collateral consequences for the economy and innocent employees. After the Justice Department indicted Enron 's accounting firm, Arthur Andersen, in 2002, the firm collapsed and 28,000 jobs were lost.

In the SAC case, the indictment could deliver a death blow to the fund. Already, amid several guilty pleas by former SAC employees and a series of civil actions brought by federal securities regulators, the fund's investors have pulled about $5 billion of $6 billion in outside money from the firm. Those that have withdrawn money include major financial-industry players like Blackstone Group and Citigroup.

That exodus could gain steam in the wake of the indictment. SAC also must assuage concerns from Goldman Sachs and other large banks that trade with SAC and finance its operations. There is little precedent for what a criminal charge would mean for SAC and its banking relationships, but legal experts said that an indictment could trigger default provisions in the fund's agreements with its trading partners, meaning that it would force brokerage firms to stop doing business with the fund.

But the charges won't necessarily destroy SAC. Until now, Mr. Cohen has been largely shielded from the crippling effects of mass investor withdrawals. Of the $15 billion that SAC managed at the beginning of the year, about $8 billion is Mr. Cohen's.

One option for Mr. Cohen would be to shut down SAC and open up a so-called "family office" that managed his own personal fortune. But Securities and Exchange Commission, as part of a civil action filed against Mr. Cohen last week that accuses him of failing to supervise his employees, could seek to have him banned from the financial-services industry for life, an outcome that would prohibit him from trading stocks.

Mr. Cohen could also deploy his deep Wall Street Rolodex to sustain the fund. He sits on the vaunted board of the Robin Hood Foundation, a nonprofit fighting poverty, with David M. Solomon, the co-head of investment banking at Goldman Sachs. He also serves as a trustee of Brown University, alongside Brian T. Moynihan, the chief executive of Bank of America. (One of Mr. Cohen's seven children graduated from Brown.)

SAC could also stem concerns by combating the criminal charge. The government will face off against an army of lawyers from two of the world's most sophisticated law firms: Willkie Farr & Gallagher and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. Martin Klotz at Willkie and Daniel J. Kramer at Paul Weiss have spearheaded the SAC representation.

For the criminal case, the fund has also enlisted Mark F. Pomerantz and Theodore V. Wells Jr. of Paul Weiss. Mr. Pomerantz has been involved in a number of insider-trading cases, including the defense of Samuel Waksal, the former chief executive of Imclone Systems, and Joseph Contorinis, a former portfolio manager at Jefferies Group. Mr. Chiasson, the former SAC employee convicted last year, recently hired him to handle his appeal.

Mr. Wells is considered one of the country's preeminent trial lawyers, and he and Mr. Pomerantz work closely together on many of their cases. Among Mr. Wells's high-profile assignments have been political corruption cases, including representing Robert Torricelli, the former United States senator; I. Lewis Libby, the former adviser to Vice President Cheney; and Eliot Spitzer, the former New York governor.

Detroit is Paying Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr a Quarter Million to File for Bankruptcy

The surprise is not that Detroit is filing for bankruptcy. The road signs have been pointing toward this conclusion at least since Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr took the job – and the leash – offered to him by Gov. Rick Snyder.

Strike that.





Detroit has been headed toward bankruptcy for years, because Detroit’s accounts have been screwed for years. Management of Detroit’s finances has been the equivalent of a shell game for quite some time, so those who say that the bill has come due are correct on that point. I am 100 percent opposed to Orr’s appointment, and I will never stop saying that his presence here is illegitimate. Gov. Snyder’s decision to disregard the will of his own voters and force them to accept an EM was nothing short of criminal.

But it would be a lie to say that Orr is responsible for the bankruptcy. As a matter of fact, I suspect the only reason he didn’t move to file on his first day behind the desk was because he had to at least appear to be trying alternative strategies. Strategies like offering to take Detroit’s creditors on a bus ride through the Detroit ghettoes so they could see firsthand how bad things are here. And then, after a good cry, find it within their hearts to forgive all debts because surely no creditor would have the heart to collect on a debt after seeing that the debtor is having a hard time, right?

Yeah. Strategies like that. Well thought-out strategies. Brilliant strategies. Strategies that make it so wonderfully clear why Michigan is paying this man Orr his $275,000 salary; to offer bus rides to creditors. And then, when the creditors decide they’d rather not take the ride because they don’t want their pictures taken and because they would have to sign a form that basically lets the city off the hook in case they get shot or killed or whatever (because, after all, they were going to the ghetto and chances are they would indeed stand out just a tad), then Orr moves forward on what was most likely the plan all along.

Funny thing is, we really didn’t need to pay Orr all this money to file bankruptcy. I’m pretty sure that’s a course of action our own elected leaders could have figured out how to do on their own. And once the bankruptcy is in place, once again, why exactly do we need Orr? Because we’re the biggest municipality to file bankruptcy means we need an emergency manager to make sure everything goes OK?

If the judge authorizes the city to move forward with a Chapter 9 bankruptcy case, Orr would propose a plan of reorganization. This could take weeks, months or years. Bankruptcy court allows the city to restructure its operations and its balance sheet. This could involve budget cuts, layoffs, consolidation, the sale of assets, slashing union contracts, selling assets and dramatically reducing city debts, including outstanding bonds.
 The city will attempt to win support for the reorganization plan from creditors, including secured bondholders, general obligation bondholders, unions and pension boards. If the city wins enough support, the plan would be put to a vote — and with enough support, the city could emerge from bankruptcy. Without enough support, the judge could tell the city it must continue to negotiate with creditors.



In other words, we might not even be approved for bankruptcy, which means we’d be back to square one. And since a sizable number of creditors have already signaled they don’t exactly plan to swallow the numbers that Orr  has been trying to feed them then it’s all but a certainty they’re gonna take this fight to the mat. Maybe they’ll prevail, maybe they won’t, but didn’t I tell you this was gonna get real ugly?

Maybe it’s just me, but I thought Orr’s purpose was to be our salvation. To save us from ourselves. To make a way out of no way. For a quarter million dollar salary I damned sure expected more than this, even if he did sign on to assist Gov. Snyder in stealing democracy from his own citizens. You mean to tell me there isn’t even honor among thieves anymore?

In a tweet today, Orr said, “We’re changing the culture of entitlement here in Detroit, Michigan.”

By filing for bankruptcy? Really?

No, Kevyn. Last I heard, we’re still entitled to a democracy. That’s the thing about theft; the rightful owner doesn’t mind putting up a fight to get back what’s rightfully his.

Steelers Pre-draft Visits Show That Defense Is Still A Priority

As the NFL's pre-draft visit period comes to a close, the total tally of the players entertained by the Pittsburgh Steelers tells a familiar tale. Back on January 8th, If It Ain't Steel wrote an article that said the fixing of the Steelers starts with defense. Apparently the Steelers themselves agree. Each NFL team is allowed 30 pre-draft visits. The Steelers total of 24 is more heavily represented by the defensive side (17) of the ball than the offensive side (7) of it. While there are holes over the entirety of the roster, the defensive side of the ball is...(ahem) more experienced and mature. Three of the four starters in the defensive backfield alone carry an average age of 33 as of the 2013 season. Aside from the array of pass rushers brought in (and I am a firm believer in the theory that you can't have too many players who can rush the passer), two things stand out when looking at the visiting players. The first being that the cornerbacks brought in indicate where the Steelers will be looking for that much needed youth and depth.It is of interest that of the cornerbacks making visits - Florida State's Xavier Rhodes, Utah State's Will Davis (whose interesting story is linked here: http://tinyurl.com/cjh26ad), UConn's Blidi Wreh-Wilson (pictured above), LSU's Tharold Simon and William & Mary's B.J. Webb - all but one are mid-round prospects. Are the third through the fifth rounds where they will look to pull the trigger on the position? The Steelers let unrestricted free agent CB Keenan Lewis walk via free agency, so that leaves Ike Taylor, Cortez Allen and William Gay as the only three who could be considered locks to make the 53-man roster next season. Bringing up the rear, as it were, behind them are Curtis Brown, DeMarcus Van Dyke, Josh Victorian, Isaiah Green and Justin King. Conventional wisdom dictates that only one or two of those five players make it onto the 53 man roster, and the odds favor only one if the Steelers invest a mid-round pick on another cornerback.The other thing that stood out was the lack of true five-technique defensive linemen to make their way to the South Side. Although Steelers.com says Utah’s Star Lotulelei, Florida’s Sharrif Floyd, BYU’s Ziggy Ansah (who himself could also play OLB) and Florida State’s Bjoern Werner are the top defensive line prospects in this month's NFL Draft (and players the Steelers could potentially select), none of those were brought in. One such player to consider might be Utah's Joe Kruger who declared early for the draft following his junior season. Per Gil Brandt of NFL.com, "Kruger - the younger brother of Paul Kruger, who was a member of the Super Bowl XLVII-champion Baltimore Ravens and just signed a lucrative free-agent contract with the Cleveland Browns - stood on all of his numbers from the combine.
